Message from the Principal

Oakdale Families,

Happy New Year!  I hope you had a wonderful and restful winter break with your families.  It’s hard to believe we are midway through the second trimester already.  There is still a lot of learning to be done in all grade levels!

One of our goals for 2017 is to improve our English Language Arts and Math scores in all grade levels.  Also, we are striving to improve our attendance.   There are several ways you can help!  Please help your students complete their homework, in addition to making sure they are reading at home daily.  Teachers can provide home login information for our computer learning programs such as Lexia (Reading/ Language Arts) and ST Math (Jiji).  These programs can be accessed through desktop computers, laptops, and tablets.  Also, if your student is going to be absent, please make sure you let our office know as soon as possible (916-566-1910).

You may not know that our school library is now open 5 days a week.  We encourage our students and their families to borrow books as often as possible!

I am looking forward to seeing you around Oakdale!

Debra Chandler, Principal

Volunteer opportunities at Oakdale!

Grades 3-6 will be having field trip opportunities coming up.

If you would like to be a volunteer chaperone, please contact your child’s teacher as soon as possible.  There is paperwork to fill out in addition to fingerprints and a TB Test that must be completed.

Important Safety Reminder

There is no supervision for students prior to 7:45am, when the cafeteria opens for breakfast.  If you are dropping your student off prior to 7:45am, there is no one to watch him/her.  Please do not drop students off prior to 7:45am.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Student and Parent Handbook

The 2014-2015 Student and Parent Handbook is a great resource for families to find answers to many questions. In this handbook, you can read about Oakdale's attendance policy, dress code, behavior expectations and policies, daily routines and procedures around school, academic responsibilities of the students, and several other topics as well. Please take a moment to read through this information.

CommonCoreStandards.jpg

The Common Core Standards are the new learning objectives student will encounter in K-12 schools.  Some things will remain the same.  For instance, in early grades, students will still learn the foundational reading and math concepts, but there are other significant shifts among all the grade levels that require our attention and study.  You will see your student reading and interacting with more non-fiction text.  You will see a new emphasis on deep conceptual understanding in math.  You will see your student being challenged to cite evidence that supports their answers in both reading and math.  Our teachers are preparing for the changes Common Core Standards will bring by studying the standards, learning teaching strategies to use in the classroom, and finding resources to use for this type of instruction.   We began this work last school year and we will continue to prepare during late start Wednesdays and staff development days.

Please visit our district's website to find an abundance of information on the Common Core Standards.

Do you know an outstanding teacher?

Twin Rivers Unified School District is pleased to participate in the 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year program through the Sacramento County Office of Education.

This program highlights educational innovation, student learning, and the rewards of teaching. The Teacher of the Year process pays tribute to our teaching force, the complexity of challenges that confront our schools, and the need to promote collaboration and teamwork to meet those challenges.

Anyone may submit a nomination form - staff members, students, families, and community members as well as the teachers themselves. Nominations are due to principals, in writing, by Friday, Jan. 20, 2017.

The Teacher of the Year process and form links are available below. Should you have any questions regarding this program, please contact the Communications Department at 916-566-1628.

Three yellow buses rolled through Twin Rivers just before the winter break, loaded with boxes of food and wrapped gifts for 20 families in need. Also on board were Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with other volunteers from the Twin Rivers central office.

“Thank you TRUSD for the love ... we are so grateful and humbled by the gifts,” responded student Nani Poloai. “Maybe there really is a Santa Claus after all.”

The volunteers started their day at the Sacramento Food Bank where they picked up donations of fresh fruits and vegetables. Before deliveries began, the buses stopped by the district office to collect gifts for all members of the families that were on the routes.

The gifts were donated and wrapped by central office volunteers.
